You can have zero or more characters in between the
start-quote and matching end-quote characters. The
valid characters include the English alphabet a to z
(lower-case) and A to Z (upper-case), the digits 0 to 9,
and actually any printable character shown on the keyboard,
and actually any Unicode character which includes many
alphabets other than the English alphabet.
For the purpose of this material, we refer to all these
characters as normal characters.
